Magazines

Over time, I've collected a bunch of "classic" computing magazines and have extracted some of the more interesting articles:

Random Articles

MICRO: the 6502 Journal

KIM-1 Notes

Compute II

Homebrew Computer Club Newsletter

Kilobaud & Interface Age

BYTE Magazine

Popular Electronics

Radio-Electronics

Dr. Dobb's Journal

What I'd like to have on the following pages is scans of classic computing related articles and advertisements. I found myself amazed at the format of the advertisements, as well as their contents. When many of these issues were available for the first time, I was about 11 years old. I told my wife not too long ago that I was born about 5-10 years too late. What I wouldn't give now to have been smart enough to spend some of my savings on an IMSAI 8080 :-)

Scans of published articles are provided for private non-commercial research and archival purposes only. Many of the publishers have gone out of business or in some cases may have been absorbed into other publishing houses. If someone desires not to have their article archived here, please let me know and we can address it satisfactorily.

Random Articles

Now, this one is interesting. While paging through a folder of papers, I found this map. I think it's for "Adventure" but I'm not sure. Here's a scan of it. On 8/23/2008, Nate Lawson dropped me an email indicating that this is indeed an Adventure map from a later version of the Crowther and Woods Adventure program. Thanks, Nate!

Random 68000-related Articles

A few friends asked me to scan some 68k-related documents for a pending project within the N8VEM project on Google Groups, so here they are:

MICRO: the 6502 Journal

MICRO: the 6502 Journal was a 6502-specific magazine published by Robert M. Tripp (http://www.flexable.com). Mike Naberezny and I (and a few others as we fill-in random missing issues) scaned the issues borrowed from both Jack Rubin and Bob Tripp (a total of 76 issues of MICRO were published).

KIM-1 Notes

Jack Rubin has graciously contributed scans of the KIM-1 users group newsletter called KIM Notes. This newsletter eventually became the SBC Gazette section of Compute! Magazine:

Compute!/Compute II/SBC Gazette

Here are a few issues of Compute II magazine. This was a spin-off version of Compute! specifically targeted at single-board computer owners, with a particular focus on 6502-based boards such as the KIM, AIM, SYM and OSI models (called "KAOS" in the magazine). Now interestingly, it seems that after the spin-off into Compute II, Compute! continued to have an "SBC Gazette" section, but then after Volume 3 of Compute II, it re-merged into the Compute! that I remember when I subscribed to it. Go figure.

Here are the issues I have presently:

Homebrew Computer Club Newsletter

This is the newsletter for the Homebrew Computer Club. I only have four issues, and I'm not entirely sure how long the newsletter lasted. In Volume 2, issue 1 is the famous "Open Letter to Hobbyists" from Bill Gates.

Kilobaud Microcomputing & Interface Age

I also have a handful of issues of other magazines such as Kilobaud and Interface Age.

BYTE Magazine

Byte was another of the early computing hobbyist magazines, began in 1975. Byte historically provided a good mix of computer construction and theory/discussion articles. Each issue in the early years contained some sort of construction article from Steve Ciarcia. Steve eventually split from BYTE and created his own applications-oriented magazine, Circuit Cellar

Unfortunately, I didn't subscribe to BYTE when it was a magazine of that type. BYTE seemed to change format (for the worse, in my opinion) sometime after McGraw-Hill purchased it. Looking through the issues that I have (1979 to 1986), I can see a change already in 1986. In its last years, I only read BYTE for Jerry Pournelle's "Chaos Manor" series.

Sadly, in its 20th year of publication, CMP Publications, BYTE's last owners, ceased publication with the July, 1998 issue. The magazine had gotten very thin over the immediately prior two years, so it does not come as a surprise to yours truly that it would have been killed. BYTE has since resurfaced as the Web-zine Byte.com.

I have collected issues as early as 1975, and I'll do the same thing with the table of contents as I have with the other magazines that I own.

    Random Articles

Popular Electronics

P-E was one of my all-time favorite hobbyist electronics construction and information periodical. Radio-Electronics, which I had also subscribed to for years, sometimes seems to lack direction, changing names and formats several times over the time since I've been a subscriber. in 2002, both of these magazines were shut-down and their subscriber lists purchased by Nuts & Volts, to which I separately subscribed before this event.

Anyway, here is a summary of the classic computer-related articles that I've culled from my P-E issues. I have issues dating back as far as 1976, and as current as 1981. The citation format includes the issue date and the page number, as well. Because of the way that some articles were scanned, more than one article may point to the same PDF file. Thanks to Josh Bensadon for scanning these!

In November, 1982, Popular Electronics changed its name to "Computers and Electronics" to reflect the changing demographics and interests of the readers and evidencing the importance of computers to the hobbyist. This emphasis can be seen in the new masthead..."Computers" gain top billing.
